What can we do if we are caught in a Chemical Attack?

What can we do if we are caught in a Chemical Attack?

What can we do if we are caught in a Chemical Attack?Things have really changed in the world. Isis can make their own chemical weapons, who knows what chemical weapons have escaped from Syria and it seems that nation-states have no problem conducting assassinations using nerve agent. If you live or work in an urban environment, use mass transit on a regular basis, or around large gatherings of people on a regular basis you should highly consider carrying a chemical protection component in your get home bag.

This does not need to be a very big item, as a matter of fact, it’s very small. This is what a chemical protection pouch should have:

  1. Latex gloves: 1 or 2 pairs
  2. Eye protection: Shop goggles, or glasses
  3. N95 or N100 mask: one or two
  4. Plastic shopping bag: one or two
  5. RSDL packet: one or two

All of this can be placed in a small pouch and carried on your hip or with a strap over your shoulder. The concept is to protect any exposed skin and your airways. The N95 masks are easily obtainable at any hardware store and they protect your mouth and nose. The plastic shopping bag is to strip over your head after you have protected your airways and put your eye protection on. After you pull the shopping bag over your head rip a hole in the bag large enough to see out of.

This kit is designed to get you out the contaminated area and into safety. It is not designed for long-term use or to take the place of better protective measures. This will help in any type of contamination and not just Chemical Warfare Agents. As with any preps, everyone needs to decide for themselves what the priorities are. If you think this is a waste of time simply don’t do it but if I worked in a big city I would surely have these items available in my get home bag.

I know what you’re thinking, “I will look like an idiot” right? Well, it’s better to look like an idiot and live then to look like everyone else and die!

In the next post I will tell you how to make a simple improvised protective mask. Thanks for reading!
