So what’s the good news about Smallpox? Is there any?
Well there is some good news. In June of 2001 an exercise called Operation Dark Winter was conducted at Andrews AFB Maryland with senior government officials. It examined how the US would respond to a Bioterror Attack like Smallpox and if we were ready for such an attack. The findings are grim and the answer in 2001 was no. The country has come a long way since then and we have corrected and/or identified some of the short falls we have in a National Response.
So what’s the good news about Smallpox? Is there any?The US has established some stockpiles of drugs and vaccines but not nearly enough to respond to an attack. These stockpiles maybe enough to respond to a localized outbreak or a single attack but not the type of attack I described in my last post. We have no good warning or reporting system that can give any type of early warning of and outbreak or an attack. By the time the indicators were known the contagion would have already infected thousands and maybe tens of thousands. The government response, if it went perfectly, could save many and limit the spread. Millions would still most likely die.
So what is the good news? US! You and me! The Preppers are the good news. We have the ability to cut our selves off from society or we are working on it right now. In this type of attack isolation is the best protection. This is sometimes referred to as social distancing but it means isolation. Nothing and no one in or out! Cut yourself off completely from the outside world and wait. How long you say? Well as a minimum 2-6 months. It will take the government a month to get a handle on what the problem really is and how big it is. That is just about enough time for things to get a little stabilized. In most disasters the real help comes from friends, neighbor and relatives helping each other out, that will not happen in this case. People will be afraid of what could happen if they try to help others. We, the US, cannot expect much help from outside our country as well. I will continue this train of thought in my next post.
